’Sonnets from the Portuguese’ by Elizabeth Barrett Browning; [1849-1850].
Ashley MS A223 1 letter
Sonnets from the Portuguese’ by Elizabeth Barrett Browning; [1849-1850]. Autograph fair copy of Sonnet 42, written on one side only of an octavo leaf of pale green wove paper. No watermark, but embossed ’BATH’. The poem is entitled ’Future and Past’, as it is in Poems , 1850, where it was printed separately from the other ’Sonnets from the Portuguese’ in order not to betray their disguise by its obvious connection with the sonnet ’Past and Future’ previously printed in Poems , 1844, vol. i, p. 126. It was first included among the other ’Sonnets from the Portuguese’ as Sonnet 42 in the 4th, 1856 edition of Poems . The text found in the MS. differs only by the omission of the ’e’ in ’ministering’ from that printed in Poems , 1850, vol. i, p. 362. The MSS. of the remaining forty-three sonnets, on identical paper, are preserved in the Armstrong Browning Library, Baylor University. Accompanying the MS. is a letter (ff. 117-118b), with envelope (ff. 119, 119b), from Mary Russell Mitford to W. C. Bennett, concerning among other matters W. S. Landor and the poverty of the Brownings, 2 Aug. 1854. Ashley Library Catalogue , i, pp. 97-98.
